Springfield recycling programs expected to receive boost following fee increase

Posted:
SPRINGFIELD - Springfield officials say the amount of revenue generated from a recycling fee increase could allow the city to expand current recycling programs and offer new ones.

In April 2013, Springfield's recycling fee was increased from 50 cents a month to $1.50 a month.  City officials say the higher fees has allowed for the strengthening of recycling during downtown events, as well as expansion in marketing recycling throughout Springfield.

According to Springfield Public Works Director Mark Mahoney, the increased fee should bring in $720,000, more than three times than the $219,000 generated in previous years.  Mahoney adds that the fee has allowed the city to provide year-round pick-up services to residents, as well as the expansion of waste collection services.
