University of Illinois to celebrate 100th anniversary of Armory Building's completion

CHAMPAIGN - The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the completion of its historic Armory Building on October 24 from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

The public is invited to attend the celebration at the historic building, which will include a luncheon and program.  The luncheon and program will be hosted by the Fighting Illini Battalion and supported by the Military Education Council and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.  Tickets are $19 per person, and can be purchased online at

At the time of the Armory Building's completion in 1914, it was the largest structure without a center support in the world.  In 1924, the building was given its well-recognized look with the addition to the facade, which was completed by Charles A. Platt.  The building's original center structure design, created by William Carbys Zimmerman, remains mostly unchanged.
