Illinois residents to receive help with Medicare options

SPRINGFIELD - Seniors and disabled people will be able to get free help in enrolling in Medicare from now until December 7, courtesy of a program offered by the Illinois Department of Aging.

The Senior Health Insurance Program, or SHIP, is a free statewide health insurance counseling service that helps Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers.  SHIP counselors will be able to help individuals by explaining the health, drug, and supplemental plans available during the annual open enrollment period, which started Wednesday.

According to Illinois Department of Aging Director John Holton, counselors can help beneficiaries and caregivers understand their choices when deciding on Medicare coverage options.

Individuals who wish to contact SHIP may do so by calling (800) 252-8966 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
