Illinois-based energy company to answer questions on gas plant site cleanup

BLOOMINGTON - An Illinois-based energy and shipping company will answer questions about the cleanup of a former manufactured gas plant site in Bloomington during an open house on Monday.

Nicor Gas will answer questions about the latest phase of cleanup at the four-acre site, which is contaminated with coal tar.  A plant that used several raw materials, like coal and oil, to manufacture gas was housed on that site from 1883 until 1951.

Efforts to clean the site started back in 1995.  According to Nicor spokesman Bernard Anderson, a below-grade retaining wall is planned to be built, and additional excavation will be planned for next year.  The retaining wall will take approximately eight months to build.
