Champaign County Board votes against using downtown jail as correctional facility

URBANA - The Champaign County Board has decided that a 35-year-old downtown Urbana jail will not be used as a correctional facility.

Board officials voted against using the decades-old jail as a correctional facility, but officials say the jail could be a potential location of a sheriff's office.

Local planners and engineers are working to develop a sheriff's operations master plan for Champaign County.  The plan will look at the future of the downtown jail, the sheriff's office, and an east Urbana satellite jail.

Officials say the plan is expected to be given to the county board by early 2015.
