5 central Illinois students named "Commended Students" in nationwide scholarship program

CHAMPAIGN - Five students from Champaign Unit 4 School District have been named Commended Students in the 2014-2015 National Merit Scholarship Program.

High School students are eligible for National Merit honors by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test in the fall of their junior year.  Approximately 34,000 high scorers on the PSAT receive Letters of Commendation, recognizing their outstanding academic promise.

Commended Students are named based on a nationally applied Selection Index score, which can vary from year to year, but is typically below the level required for participants to be named semifinalists in their respective states.

Although they will not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, the students, Dawn Haken and William Smith from Central High School, and Sophia Hannauer, Justin Lumetta, and Laura Salo from Centennial High School, could become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by businesses and corporations.
