Macoupin County Health Department confirms whooping cough cases

STAUNTON - Macoupin County Health Department officials confirmed this week that two dozen Staunton School District students have become ill with whooping cough since September.

On Thursday, Macoupin County Health Department's director of nursing Angela Weidner said the health department is working with the school district to get the illness under control.

According to Weidner, only a few of the 24 confirmed cases involved students who hadn't been vaccinated against whooping cough, also known as Pertussis.  She added that all of the reported cases have been mild, and that the first cases affected high school students before eventually affecting students in third and fourth grade.
