Nurse Blinded in One Eye After Attack

DECATUR - Jermaine Jones, 31, has been charged with three counts of Aggravated Battery for allegedly attacking a nurse in Decatur.

Earlier this month, Decatur Police arrived at the 7th floor of St. Mary's Hospital, a locked psychiatric facility. A police sworn statement obtained by WAND News indicates Jones punched an on duty nurse in the face as she sat in the chair in the dining room. The victim was admitted to the emergency room, received five stitches over her right eye. According to the statement, the nurse's right orbital bone was broken in the attack, leaving her permanently blind in that eye.

A spokesperson for St. Mary's Hospital released the following statement: "We deeply regret that one of our nurses was assaulted in the hospital. She remains in our thoughts and prayers. St. Mary's Hospital has safety measures in place to protect our colleagues as they care for patients and we continue to investigate what occurred in this situation. Our goal is to ensure that we have the safest environment possible for our caregivers and our patients."

Jones is being held on $250,000 bond.
