Doctor in fraud case has recognizance bond revoked

SPRINGFIELD - A Taylorville doctor who is awaiting sentencing for the theft of Social Security disability payments is back in jail following a recent arrest on unrelated charges.

Authorities say Vernon Klinefelter, 62, had his recognizance bond revoked after being arrested October 11 on charges of driving under the influence and possession of cocaine.

The DUI and possession charges stem from an incident in which police say Klinefelter was stumbling and appeared confused at a Pawnee store.  According to police, officers that responded to the scene found cocaine in Klinefelter's car, which was left running in the parking lot.

As a result, the federal judge overseeing Klinefelter's fraud case revoked the bond, saying the recent arrest shows he's a danger to the public.  Thomas Finks, Klinefelter's lawyer, unsuccessfully argued for 24-hour home confinement.
