Inmates' unclaimed remains interred at Hillsboro cemetery

Posted:
HILLSBORO - Authorities say the cremated remains of 14 men who died in a central Illinois prison have been interred at a mausoleum in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Officials say all 14 Graham Correctional Center inmates died within the past eight years.  However, no relatives came forward to claim the remains, so the ashes have sat on a shelf in the Montgomery County coroner's office.

Several county officials started to talk about the unclaimed remains, and board member Mary Bathurst reached out to a local funeral home director and church groups.  Bathurst says the 14 men deserved a proper burial.

The unclaimed remains will stay inside a vault in the Hillsboro cemetery.  Officials say more remains can be added should they go unclaimed.
