Illinois man sentenced to 8 years in prison for fatal DUI crash

URBANA - A Villa Grove man who caused a fatal car crash while he had a marijuana byproduct in his system has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Timothy Bretz, 33, was sentenced on Monday following his conviction last month of aggravated driving under the influence of an intoxicating compound.

According to authorities, Bretz was driving a grain truck in October 2013 when he collided with a car at an unmarked intersection.  The driver of the car, 19-year-old Wyatt Jones, died the following day.

However, Bretz's attorney says the law is wrong, and that Bretz wasn't feeling the effects of the marijuana he smoked two weeks prior to the accident.

Bretz will be required to serve 85 percent of his eight-year prison sentence.
