Illinois State Police to repair roof over evidence room

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois State Police say repairs are being made to a leaking roof over an evidence room located in a building near their headquarters in downtown Springfield.

If the leaking roof isn't repaired, evidence collected in criminal investigations and stored in the room could be damaged.  According to Illinois State Police spokeswoman Monique Bond, evidence was relocated to a secure part of the building while the roof is fixed.

Officials say they want to roof fixed before winter.  Authorities say Illinois State Police have signed off on a $250,000 contract to fix the roof, with bidding documents stating that it's "an emergency purchase."

The leaking roof dates back to 1987.  It was patched in May, but heavy rains caused the patches to not hold.
