Nonprofit organization collecting donations for Purple Heart memorial

SPRINGFIELD - A nonprofit organization based in Springfield is collecting donations to pay for the construction of a Purple Heart memorial at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Hayes-Krell Memorial Chapter 159 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart has raised approximately $32,000 for the memorial, which would honor service members who received Purple Heart medals for their combat experiences.

Members say they plan to collect donations for the project at Springfield's Sixth Street Wal-Mart on November 15.  According to Chapter Trustee Robert Cowles, any money donated beyond the cost of the memorial's construction will be given to veterans' organizations.
