Champaign day care operator charged with aggravated battery of a child

CHAMPAIGN - Authorities say a longtime Champaign day care operator has been arrested for allegedly injuring a six-month old boy.

On Wednesday, Debbie May, 54, was charged with aggravated battery to a child.  Champaign police say the baby has a broken wrist and a brain injury, and has been hospitalized for more than a week.

According to prosecutors, May called the baby's mother on November 5, stating that he was acting unusually.  Prosecutors also say that the baby was moaning and limp when his parents took him to the hospital, and that May denies the boy fell or was dropped.  Doctors say the baby's injuries weren't accidental and required adult force.

May is currently being held on $150,000 bond.  If convicted, she could face between six and 30 years in prison.
