Decatur police investigate report of suspicious package

Posted:
DECATUR - Decatur Police say the Sands Viaduct was temporarily closed on Saturday while they investigated what appeared to be a suspicious package near the structure's east wall.

Police say at about 8:52 a.m., officers responded to the area after a citizen reported the suspicious package.  Upon arriving, officers say they saw a back pack placed near the east wall of the viaduct, and that the contents of the back pack were suspicious in nature.

Decatur Police immediately closed the viaduct and notified the Secretary of State Bomb Squad.  Decatur police say the bomb squad arrived at about 11:15 a.m.  After using x-rays to check the bag's contents, bomb squad technicians determined that the contents were not hazardous.  Police say the viaduct was reopened at about 12:30 p.m.

The Decatur Police Department would like to thank the public for their patience in this matter.
