Decatur City Council amends noise ordinance

DECATUR - During a scheduled meeting on Monday, the Decatur City Council voted to amend the city's noise ordinance.

Decatur's noise ordinance prohibits the operation of a sound amplification system that can be heard outside of a vehicle from 75 feet away or more.  Council members voted 6-1 to change the way penalties are assessed under the noise ordinance.  First-time offenders will receive a written warning, and individuals who continue to commit offenses after the first will face a $250 fine for the owner of the vehicle and the driver, and will have their vehicle towed.

Before the amendment, upon the first violation the driver and owner of the vehicle would be fined $250 each, and the vehicle would be towed without written warning.
