Beardstown man charged in the eight-month-old baby's death

BEARDSTOWN - Illinois State Police say a Beardstown man has been charged in the death of an eight-month-old child.

Authorities say Jose Nieto-Roman, 28, has been charged with two counts of murder and one count of aggravated battery to a child.

Authorities say on October 31, police responded to a request for medical assistance at a Food Mart on the 600 block of Wall Street in Beardstown.  When they arrived, they found a mother with a severely injured infant. The child was transported to a hospital in Rushville, where he was pronounced dead.  Police say the child was reportedly in custody of Nieto-Roman, the mother's live in boyfriend, who was not present when police arrived at the Food Mart.

An autopsy was conducted in McLean County on November 1.  Illinois State Police say the initial results of the autopsy revealed injuries consistent with blunt force trauma and third-degree burns to the victim.

Illinois State Police say Nieto-Roman is being held at the Morgan County Jail on $5 million bond.

We will continue to provide updates as they become available.
