Nearly 52,000 deer killed during first firearm hunting season weekend

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Department of Natural Resources officials have announced that nearly 52,000 deer have been killed during the first weekend of the state's firearm hunting season.

On Tuesday, officials announced that the preliminary total of the number of deer killed for the November 21-23 weekend is 51,380, down from nearly 56,000 killed during the first weekend of the 2013 firearm hunting season.  The second portion of the 2014 season will be from December 4 to December 7.

IDNR officials are reminding hunters that archery deer season continues through January 18, 2015, the antlerless-only seasons are from January 1-4 and January 16-18, and the muzzleloader season is from December 12-14.
