1 dead after 2-vehicle crash in Riverton

RIVERTON - Illinois State Police say a teenager has died after a two-vehicle collision in Riverton Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities say a Chevrolet truck driven by a 17-year-old girl was traveling east on Old Route 36 west of Fourth Street while a Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 20-year-old woman and transporting a 22-year-old passenger, was traveling west in the same location.  According to the ISP's preliminary investigation, the driver of the Chevrolet truck lost control on a slick roadway surface and collided with the Jeep Cherokee.

Police say the drivers of both vehicles were transported to a local hospital for treatment.  The 17-year-old driver, identified by Sangamon County Coroner's Office's Lead Death Investigator Chris Fulcher as Emily Pinney, died later that evening.  Route 36 was closed at the scene of the crash for approximately two hours.

Police say everyone was wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.  This crash is still under the investigation of the Illinois State Police.
