Illinois Supreme Court will consider FutureGen case

SPRINGFIELD - A case regarding the FutureGen clean-coal project is set to be heard by the Illinois Supreme Court.

Last week, the Illinois Supreme Court said it would consider a 2012 Illinois Commerce Commission ruling that requires Illinois utilities, such as ComEd and Ameren, to purchase electricity from the FutureGen facility.

ComEd and other alternative power suppliers challenged the ruling, saying the Illinois Commerce Commission exceeded its authority.  However, Illinois' 1st District Appellate Court rejected that challenge in July.

The FutureGen project aims to refit a coal-fired power plant in Meredosia to capture carbon dioxide emissions and store them underground.
