Illinois lawmakers consider making same-day voter registration permanent

SPRINGFIELD - Illinois lawmakers say they are considering making a law that allows voters to register on Election Day permanent.

Legislation that would permanently allow same-day voting registration will be presented to a House committee Monday afternoon.  The legislation will also allow extended early voting, and will make it easier for votes to be cast at college campuses.  Originally, the changes were only effective for the 2014 election.

According to the legislation's sponsor, State Senator Don Harmon, the same-day registration was a successful experiment that's worth continuing, and that it would be ideal if those provisions were in place for the spring municipal elections.  However, Republicans say the measure were only intended to boost Democratic voter turnout during the 2014 election.
