Decatur Cares Auto Gives Homeless Jobs, Hope

DECATUR- At newly opened Decatur Cares Auto, they provide everything from oil changes to complete engine overhauls.  But at the shop, they're not just fixing cars, they're fixing people.
Decatur Cares Auto is the newest part of Decatur Cares Rescue Mission, which includes the Pershing Road Training Center, the Water Street Mission, and Grace House.
The goal at the shop is to give jobs skills and employment to people staying in the mission.
Newer workers are guided by two certified mechanics and work their way up.
Executive Director Jonathan Kelm says he got the idea while in prayer.
"We're taking people who need a second chance, we're revitalizing the community by creating jobs, by creating a service-based industry where these guys can go to work," Kelm says.  "And it's helping their lives, and it's helping the community."
At the shop, they also do auto detailing and are working on getting their licensing to sell cars.  They will also offer snow plow service this winter.
They're offering free winter inspections to try to get people in the door.  Kelm says in the new year, Decatur Cares will expand with home improvement services and landscaping.
