SPRINGFIELD - Approximately $33 million in grants that would benefit before- and after-school programs at schools and organizations across the state have been approved by the Illinois State Board of Education.

Illinois State Board of Education officials made the announcement on Tuesday.  Officials say the programs serve almost 70,000 students every year, and that the programs that are receiving funding are aimed at pre-kindergarten through 12th grade student in low-performing, high-poverty schools.

Education board officials some goals they would like to accomplish with the grants include helping students meet and exceed local and state standards in core subjects, like math and reading.
