SPRINGFIELD - Authorities say two Sangamon County law enforcement officials have been hospitalized after attempting to detain a driver who was wanted in an earlier hit-and-run.

According to Sangamon County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Dan Parrish, the driver, 20-year-old Decarlos Benton, began fighting with deputies while they escorted him to an ambulance after the driver crashed into a utility pole on Tuesday.

Police officers from multiple departments came to the the aid of the deputies following radio calls for help.  Eventually, Benton was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital.  Both deputies were also taken to the hospital for treatment, but Parrish says their injuries were not serious.

Authorities have not released the names of the deputies involved in this incident.  Benton currently faces charges of resisting a peace officer, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving under the influence, and three count of aggravated battery.
