Decatur city manager appoints new police chief, fire chief

DECATUR - City Manager Ryan McCrady has announced that Brad Sweeney has been appointed as Chief of Police, and Jeff Abbott has been appointed Chief of the Decatur Fire Department.  Both men have nearly 20 years of experience with their respective departments.

Brad Sweeney began working for the Decatur Police Department in 1995.  In his time with the department, he served as a patrol officer, master patrol officer, sergeant, lieutenant, and as commanding officer of the Administrative Operations Division.  Sweeney also served as a member of the emergency response team, a field-training officer, school resource officer, supervisor of the bike patrol unit, and commander of the department's anti-crime team.

Jeff Abbott joined the Decatur Fire Department in 1995 after starting his career as a volunteer firefighter in his hometown of Dawson.  Before being appointed to Fire Chief, Abbott served as a lieutenant, captain, and deputy chief.  Abbott also holds several certifications related to his job, and also served as fire union president from 2000 to 2001 and as a member of the Foreign Fire Tax Board from 1999 until 2007.
