Time running out for state leaders to select next comptroller

SPRINGFIELD - Time is running short for state leaders, who must appoint a replacement for Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka in her current and future terms.

Topinka, 70, died on Wednesday after suffering a stroke.  She won her bid for a new term in the 2014 election, and was set to begin that new term in January.

Current Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has not announced when he will name a new comptroller, and the Illinois Attorney General's Office says it's working to interpret the state Constitution on the proper process to use in this situation.

According to Comptroller's office spokesperson Brad Hahn, checks to state agencies and schools that approved by Topinka prior to her death are still being processed.  However, Hahn adds that current operations can only continue for "several" days, and for future payments to be approved, a new comptroller must be named.
