DECATUR - Thousands of gifts donated to WAND's Spirit of Giving toy drive were handed out to children who need them on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
On December 5, 2014 more than 5,000 gifts were collected for Toys for Tots. All of those toys were taken to Decatur's Salvation Army.
Organizers and volunteers worked tirelessly to sort them out, place them on tables, and divide them by age groups. That was all in preparation for parents this week. When parents walked in, they were given a holiday helper and a paper with their personal information on it. Then they started shopping.
The distribution worked differently this year than in previous years.
"I like it because you get to pick out what they like and stuff versus last year it was a surprise," said Melissa Hagermann.
In the past, parents were given a bag already filled with gifts. Many people told WAND preferred this year's way of doing things.
Although thousands of gifts were donated, an organizer said, they are running low on toys for children aged 6-8. If you'd like to donate, please donate new and unwrapped toys to Decatur's Salvation Army.
