2 hospitals partner to provide better care for Springfield neighborhood

SPRINGFIELD - HSHS St. John's Hospital and Memorial Medical Center are combining efforts to improve health care access to Springfield's Enos Park Neighborhood, starting in October 2015.

The partnership between the hospitals was formed after the Sangamon County Community Health Needs Assessment, during which members of the public shared their input on the region's top health priorities.  In addition to the hospitals, the Sangamon County Department of Public Health and Southern Illinois University School of Medicine will participate in the Enos Park initiative.  The University of Illinois - Springfield will also assist with focus groups.

Officials from both hospitals say 781 people gave their input, with the top four leading priorities from those who gave their input being mental health, child abuse, excess weight, and access to care.  Officials say the next step for the Enos Park initiative will be to hold three focus groups with neighborhood residents in January, in order to identify areas that hinder access to care.

The Enos Park Neighborhood is bordered by North Grand Avenue to the north, Carpenter Street to the south, North Third Street to the west, and Walnut Street to the east.
