Quinn names temporary Illinois Comptroller

CHICAGO - Governor Pat Quinn has announced a short-term successor for the late Judy Baar Topinka's position as Illinois Comptroller.

Quinn named the director of his budget office, Jerry Stermer, to the position Friday afternoon.  Stermer has also worked as the chief of staff during Quinn's first term, and was the longtime director of Voices for Illinois Children.

Stermer will serve as comptroller until Governor-elect Bruce Rauner is sworn into office on January 12, 2015.  At that time, Rauner will appoint a full-term successor.

State leaders have had conflicting ideas on how Topinka's terms should be filled.  Topinka won her re-election bid in the November 2014 election.  She died after suffering a stroke last week.
