Springfield officials expect difficulties in creating budget

SPRINGFIELD - Springfield Mayor Mike Houston says he's expecting the city's budget for next fiscal year to be one of the most difficult he's had to put together.

Springfield officials say after three years of budget cuts, areas where reductions can be made have decreased.  The city has also seen little revenue growth, with one proposed budget including an increase of less than one percent from this year's $117.4 million budget.

Officials say the increase is due to rising health care costs for employees, as well as pension funds for fire departments and police departments.  Leaders of departments throughout the city have been asked to submit their budget requests.
