IHSA sanctions 2 central Illinois basketball teams

SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois High School Association has sanctioned two central Illinois basketball programs after a fight broke out at a recent game.

IHSA officials say Decatur's MacArthur High School's and Lanphier High School's basketball teams have been placed on probation for one year, and members of both teams will need to complete sportsmanship courses in order to avoid suspensions.  Officials also say the teams' coaches are expected to attend a seminar on modeling behavior and teaching.

In addition, Lanphier High School principal Artie Doss announced plans to meet with students and parents to discuss expectations for behavior at future sporting events.

The fight happened during the final minutes of a game between the two teams on December 19.  Officials say a MacArthur player punched a Lanphier player.  Pushing and shoving followed the punch, and spectators then charged onto the court.  The game was then halted.
