Thousands fly to New York to mourn slain officers

NEW YORK (AP) – Two members of the University of Illinois Police Department's Honor Guard were among those who flew to New York for the wake and funeral of Officer Rafael Ramos.

Ramos' partner, Wenjian Liu, will be laid to rest on Sunday, January 4.

The men were killed December 20 in a daytime ambush while sitting in their patrol car. Police say the gunman turned the gun on himself after the attack.

Ramos' funeral took place Saturday. More than 20,000 people, including Vice President Joe Biden and officers from across the country, were in attendance.
