Western Illinois hospital seeks to build psychiatric unit

PITTSFIELD - A western Illinois hospital that wishes to open a psychiatric unit for older patients is asking state regulators to authorize the project.

Illini Community Hospital is seeking state approval for a project that would place a 10-bed geriatric unit in the facility.  The project, estimated to cost about $3.28 million, must first be approved by the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board during a March meeting.

The unit would serve older patients in west-central Illinois and northeastern Missouri.  According to Illini Community Hospital CEO Kathy Hull, the area is currently "a wasteland for geriatric psychiatric services."
