Deadline for state retirees' pension refunds approved

SPRINGFIELD - A schedule that outlines when refunds should be paid to Illinois state retirees, who have paid a portion of their pensions for health insurance under a 2012 law, has been approved by a court.

The law, which required state retirees to pay a portion of their annuity for the last year and a half, was found to be unconstitutional by the Illinois Supreme Court this summer.  Under the recently approved schedule, the retirees' refunds should be paid by June 15.

According to Illinois Department of Central Management Services officials, approximately $63 million was collected from about 90,000 retirees.  However, the amount the retirees will be refunded will be determined after attorneys' fees are distributed by the court.
