Urbana man arrested in connection with Thursday shooting

SAVOY - Champaign County authorities say one Urbana man has been charged in connection with a early-morning shooting in Savoy.

Authorities say police officers from multiple agencies responded to reports of shots fired at the Village at Colbert Park apartment complex at about 1:00 a.m. Thursday.  Officers arrived on scene at approximately 1:17 a.m., and saw a large group of people in a parking lot.

Authorities say when the officers prepared to investigate the incident further, several gunshots were heard, and the officers saw a man firing a handgun.  Officers immediately moved to confront the shooter, with two University of Illinois police officers firing shots.

Two individuals who suffered from non-life threatening gunshot wounds in the shoot out attempted to flee, but police caught them, and transported them to Carle Hospital for treatment.  One of the individuals, Wayne Colson, 19, was arrested on preliminary charges of unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated discharge of a firearm, and taken to Champaign County Correctional Center.
