Tax Filing Starts January 20th

Decatur – Christmas season is over.  Tax filing season is about to start.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says it will start accepting electronically filed tax returns on January 20, 2015.  Paper returns will begin processing at the same time.

Congress completed work in December.  “We have reviewed the late tax law changes and determined there was nothing preventing us from continuing our updating and testing our systems,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.  “Our employees will continue an aggressive schedule of testing and preparation of our systems during the next month to complete the final stages needed for the 2015 tax season.”

It's expected that taxpayers who file electronically will get tax refunds within 21 days.  The average refund this year is anticipated to be about $2,800.
