Mattoon Fire Department responds to attic fire, other fires in 2015
MATTOON - The Mattoon Fire Department says firefighters are responding to a report of an attic fire.
Officials say that Mattoon Fire Department crews have arrived at a residence at the 1000 block of Moultrie Avenue for a smoldering attic fire. We will provide updates on this story as they become available.
Officials also say Mattoon firefighters have responded to several reports of fires in the first week of 2015, with the first report being of a kitchen fire at Sunrise Apartments on Friday morning. Upon arriving, firefighters found that the apartment's occupant had put out the fire. Crews worked to clear out the smoke and checked to make sure there was no danger of the fire starting up again before leaving the building just after 10:00 a.m.
Later that day, Mattoon firefighters responded to another report of a structure fire in the 3200 block of Dewitt at about 5:45 p.m. Crews found large amounts of smoke and fire coming from a garage, and immediately began to extinguish the flames. Crews were on scene until 8:36 p.m. No one was injured in either incident.
On Saturday, officials say Mattoon firefighters were dispatched to the 600 block of South 16th Street at about 4:17 p.m. for a report of a kitchen fire. Upon arriving, firefighters found burnt food in the oven, and ventilated the structure before clearing the scene. No injuries were reported.
