University of Illinois officials to consider tuition proposal

URBANA - The University of Illinois Board of Trustees is set to review a proposal that would prevent an increase in tuition for incoming Illinois freshmen.

The proposal, which calls for in-state tuition rates to match the current school year's rates, will be reviewed by a Board of Trustees committee on Monday.  Non-Illinois residents' base tuition would increase by two percent.  The full board will review the proposal during their January 15 meeting.

According to University of Illinois officials, the proposal would aid middle-class Illinois students, who make too much money to qualify for financial aid, but make too little to pay for tuition on their own.

Tuition rates at the three University of Illinois campuses are as follows:

Urbana-Champaign: $12,036/year
Chicago: $10,584/year
Springfield: $9,405/year
