Illinois' 2014 temperatures ranked fourth coldest on record

CHAMPAIGN - According to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel, 2014 was the fourth coldest year on record in Illinois, with an average statewide temperature of 49.9 degrees.

Angel says that number ties the temperatures seen in 1912 and 1972, which is 2.9 degrees below average.  Illinois' coldest year on record was 1917, which saw a statewide average temperature of 48.3 degrees, or 4.5 degrees below average.

Angel also says that December only had 1.9 inches of precipitation, eight-tenths of an inch lower than the average of 2.7 inches.
