Springfield School Board approves police staffing in high schools

SPRINGFIELD - Springfield School Board members have unanimously approved the staffing of police officers in three public high schools.

The decision to hire the police officers was made on Monday.  Officials estimate the cost of having police officers at the schools through the rest of the school year to be $115,000.

According to Superintendent Jennifer Gill, some of the cost is being offset by the city.  Off-duty officers were previously hired by the school district, but cost-cutting measures led to inconsistent police presence at the schools.  Gill says the officers are expected to begin work sometime next week.
