Champaign School officials to participate in One Winter Night event

Posted:
CHAMPAIGN - Four Champaign Schools officials are combining efforts to raise awareness of homelessness in the community during C-U at Home's annual One Winter Night event.

During this event, Superintendent Dr. Judy Wiegand, Assistant Superintendent Dr. Laura Taylor, Board President Laurie Bonnett, and District Homeless Liaison Lekevie Johnson will join other volunteers looking to raise awareness of homelessness on February 6 to sleep in cardboard boxes in downtown Champaign.  District officials say more than 65 Unit 4 families and 120 students are considered homeless.

Participants also have a goal of raising at least $1,000 during this event.  C-U at Home's total event fundraising goal is set at $100,000.  Officials say the money will help support homeless community members in Champaign-Urbana.

Officials say they are still looking for volunteers to sleep outside and raise money, as well as volunteers to help with volunteer sign-in, hospitality, security, and to help set-up and tear-down the cardboard box homes.
