Intersection to be named after Coach Wayne McClain
PEORIA - A former Fighting Illini assistant basketball coach who led a Peoria high school to three state championships will have an intersection near the school named after him.
On January 15, the intersection of Griswold and Lincoln Streets will be named "Honorable Coach Wayne McClain." The intersection sits in front of Manual High School. McClain died in October 2014 after a battle with lung cancer. He was 59.
McClain made his name as Manual High School's coach, where he led the team to state championship wins during his first three seasons in the mid-1990's. From there, he worked as an assistant coach at the University of Illinois from 2002 until 2012. After a brief run with Kansas State, McClain returned to Champaign-Urbana in 2013 to work as Champaign Central High School's head basketball coach.
