ISP investigate officer-involved shooting

ARCOLA - Illinois State Police officials say they are investigating an officer-involved shooting Sunday night that led to the death of an Arcola man.

Arcola police say at about 5:39 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Circle Drive in response to a 911 call reporting a domestic disturbance involving a person with a handgun.  In addition to Arcola police officers, officers from the Tuscola and Arthur Police Departments, as well as deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Department also responded.

Authorities say while police were investigating the situation, the officers were confronted by a man armed with a handgun and an assault rifle.  During this encounter, authorities say officers shot and fatally wounded the man.

Illinois State Police say the man was identified as Tommy Smith, 39.  According to Douglas County Coroner Joe Victor, an autopsy is scheduled for January 13.
