Illinois farmers break corn and soybean production records in 2014

SPRINGFIELD - U.S. Department of Agriculture officials say Illinois farmers set soybean and corn records in 2014.

USDA officials say an estimated 2.35 billion bushels of corn were produced by farmers throughout the state last year.  That number breaks the record of 2.28 billion bushels recorded in 2007.  Officials say the 2014 number was achieved with a slight decrease in the number of acres where corn was planted.

USDA officials also say that the state's 9.8 million acres of soybeans yielded a record 548 million bushels, or about 56 bushels of soybeans per acre.

Officials add that national soybean and corn production numbers set new records in 2014.
