Illinois State Police investigate rollover crash involving stolen vehicle

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY - Illinois State Police say they are investigating a rollover crash on Interstate 57 that involved a stolen vehicle.

Authorities say on January 11 at about 6:25 p.m., a tan 1999 Acura 4-door car that had been reported stolen from Joliet lost control and rolled into a ditch near mile marker 247 on Interstate 57, eventually resting on its hood.  Police say the driver and a passenger, both described as black males, got out of the vehicle.

Illinois State Police say several individuals who saw the crash stopped to help the occupants of the crashed car, with one individual, who was driving a 2011 Toyota Tundra, announcing that police had been contacted and help was on the way.  Upon hearing this news, police say the men walked toward the parked Toyota Tundra, entered the vehicle without permission, and drove off.

Illinois State Police would like to remind the public to use caution when aiding victims of a crash or stranded motorists.  Police continue to investigate this incident.  If you have any information regarding the theft of the 1999 Acura or the 2011 Toyota Tundra, please contact the Illinois State Police at (217) 867-2050 ext. 206 or Champaign County Crime Stoppers at (217) 373-8477.
