Man ticketed in 2014 fatal crash fails to appear in court

URBANA - Authorities say a man who was ticketed over a Champaign County crash that claimed the lives of three others has failed to appear in court.

On April 20, 2014, Xiang Cheng, 20, was involved in a crash that killed Indianapolis native Otis Doxtator, Dorothy Doxtator, and Scott Doxtator.  Police say Cheng was ticketed for improper lane usage, an offense punishable by a fine.  Cheng does not face criminal charges.

During a pretrial hearing on Tuesday, Cheng's attorney, Aaron Brakke, reported that Cheng is in China.  Brakke asked Judge Brian McPheters to excuse Cheng's absence during the hearing.  However, McPheters denied the request.  McPheters also refused the state's attorney's request for an arrest warrant to be issued.

McPheters has continued the case until February 10, and has ordered Cheng to appear.
