IDOC officials dispute report's findings on assaults
SPRINGFIELD - Illinois Department of Corrections officials are disputing the findings of an unofficial report that states inmates at the Logan Correctional Center committed about 400 assaults on prison guards, staff, and other inmates since 2013.
The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees released the reports findings on Thursday. According to the report, the assaults ranged from spitting to punching, kicking, and fighting, and that the assaults are caused by overcrowding and understaffing.
However, IDOC spokesperson Tom Shaer says the report includes incidents that were not counted against the inmate due to being unintentional. Shaer adds that only 273 inmate assaults have occurred since 2013, with only four incidents being classified as serious.
