Springfield police investigate fatal shooting

SPRINGFIELD - Springfield police say they're investigating an incident that resulted in one man's death Sunday night.

Springfield police say at about 9:58 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired and a man down in the 2500 block of Poplar Avenue.  Upon arriving, officers learned that the person who was shot, 25-year-old Anthony Alves, was taken to St. John's Hospital, where he later died.  Sangamon County Coroner Cinda Edwards says an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

According to Springfield police, officers are investigating the possibility that Alves may have allegedly attempted to rob an individual at the time of the shooting.  Authorities say a search of the scene produced two handguns, with one gun believed to have been used in the shooting.  As a result of the investigation, police say one person, 28-year-old Heverry Agee, was arrested for unlawful use of a weapon.

This incident remains under the investigation of the Springfield Police Department.  No further information is available at this time.  We will continue to provide updates as they become available.
