BLOOMINGTON - Illinois Wesleyan University's athletic director has announced his retirement, nearly 50 years after he began his career as a coach at the school.

University officials say 75-year-old Dennis Bridges intends to retire when his contract ends at the end of July.  Bridges was a star player for Illinois Wesleyan University's football, baseball, and basketball teams before graduating in 1961.  Three years later, Bridges returned to become a coach at the school.

Bridges served as the university's head basketball coach for 36 years, earning the Division III national championship in 1997.  He also earned 667 wins throughout his career, placing him among the top five Division III coaches with the most wins.
