Fire Investigation May Not Reveal Cause

Decatur – Decatur firefighters were still pouring water on the ruins of a warehouse more than 24 hours after first responding to a massive fire.

The nearly century old warehouse is located at the corner of Grand Avenue and Illinois Street.  Thursday evening a private contractor hired by the city knocked down the buildings remaining walls.  The company also removed debris from both streets.

“We exhausted all of the city's resources,” said Fire Chief Jeff Abbott.  “I think we had fifty to sixty Decatur firefighters on the scene.”  The fire department used seven or eight engines along with five aerials in battling the fire in the block long warehouse.

The fire department is investigating the cause although a cause may never be determined.  One firefighter was treated for a minor injury.
